Helen Saunders with Cheva on the panga Dos Hermanos II |
With clean water just off the beach, the 84° blue water
has moved in to the Solitary Rock, only ½ mile out in front of Zihuatanejo Bay.
Offshore, the
sailfish action is very good, and probably what I have always called our “July
migration”. It is not as big an influx of sailfish as we get in the winter
months, but the minor migration does bring a lot of fish into the area. The boats are each averaging 2 to 4 sailfish
a day, with the action from 6 miles to 14 miles out.

Plus, there are a lot of
small dorado when you can find the weed lines. They are a lot of fun on a light
spin outfit or fly rod. There have been no reports of yellowfin tuna or marlin
being taken. And none showing up in the Central Mercado, which are caught by
the commercial fishermen.
Cheva, on the panga Does
Hermanos II fished 4 days this last week, and did excellent for sailfish.
Fishing with Helen Saunders and Yves Lalilberté of Toronto Canada, they caught
4 sailfish. Then on the next three days, Cheva logged 4, 3, and on Wednesday, 8
sailfish for his clients. When you can catch 19 sailfish in 4 days of fishing, that is a darn good 4 days of fishing, anywhere in the world. Cheva is
working the 7 mile area out in front of Zihuatanejo Bay.
The inshore action is still great, especially for roosterfish. Adolfo
has been fishing for roosters all this week and is still averaging 3 to 4 fish
a day, and several large jack crevalle. The clients get back to the dock
completely worn out. Plus, he got an 80
pound roosterfish for Walt Bauman of
Oklahoma this week. It took Walt an hour and a half to get it to the boat on
spin gear. The long distance photo is attached. I was checking on one of my
construction projects on Playa Blanca when I spotted Adolfo on the Dos Hermanos boat coming down the beach.
I didn’t have my good camera with me, but still managed a reasonable long
distance shot when they hooked up to the 80 pound fish. Walt is supposed to
send me a photo after he gets home for next week’s report.
They had already caught 2 roosterfish, and then the 80 pounder hit while I was taking photos from my Suburban |
