Z Fish Report (3/14/14)

I am late with the fish report because I flew up to California for a week to visit my Mom on her 89th birthday. This report will be very short, because nothing much has changed over the last three weeks.

The cooling trend is continuing with the inshore water being a cool 76 degrees, and the 81degree water is not encountered until around the 1,000 fathom line at 30 miles. The blue water is still between 12 and 15 miles off the beach.

Offshore fishing is still slow with very few sailfish or dorado being caught, with an occasional blue marlin coming up into the spread.

The inshore is still the best bet with decent fishing for light line trolling, spin rods, or the fly rod. There is good action for the large jack crevalle, hard fishing black skipjacks, and tasty sierras.

One good thing to report this week is I met with long time friend Gary Graham (owner of Baja on the Fly, California Fishing Hall of Fame, author, and outdoor writer). From his home, we made a scheduled conference call to the International Game and Fish Association (IGFA) and discussed the Roosterfish Foundation. They are enthused about the Foundation and want to help out with the research by donating some very expensive satellite tracking tags. This was excellent news.
